I have been itching to share this session for months! The Wileys contacted me earlier this year about photographing their newborn, Nora Kate, and their adopted 4-month-old, Caleb. Oh yes – a newborn and a four-month-old! At the time of our session, Caleb’s adoption wasn’t official yet, but it’s obvious to see how quickly their bond was formed. I asked Mary to tell a little about their experience:
“We received a call about a newborn needing a forever home, and we didn’t even hesitate to say yes. I have always felt like God was calling me to foster care and to adoption, but my husband was unsure. Foster care seemed scary and the thought of sending a child back into a difficult situation was not something that my husband felt like he could do emotionally. God began to work on my husband’s heart, and we began to take steps to become foster parents. We prayed God would allow us to have a small child in our home and to even one day be able to adopt a child who needed us, and He did just that. Adoption is such a beautiful picture of the adoption we have in Christ, and we are so thankful that we get such a clear picture of that through Caleb.
Domestic adoption can bring with it some difficult hurdles, some of which we face and some that we do not. The best advice we can give is to find a community who will walk with you through each day, and who will celebrate with you, cry with you, and drop by unannounced with dinner because they know you are exhausted. Know that it will not be all smiles and roses, but neither is raising biological children. It’s just that: they are children needing love, discipline, and direction. Connect with other parents, both biological and adopted, and take the time to support them and be supported by them.”
Thank you, Wileys (and Elizabeth
, for getting us together)!
