Woman Crush Wednesday // Sarah Dolislager with Scout + Feather

Welcome to September’s Woman Crush Wednesday! This is a new monthly series where I chat with some amazingly creative and inspiring women I think you need to know.

Today’s post is all about Sarah Dolislager, the heart behind Scout + Feather and the completely lovable Notes to Humanity. We originally connected via Instagram a few months ago, and I have looked forward to seeing her posts ever since. She is full of truth, wisdom, encouraging words, and cups upon cups of iced coffee. I believe she’s one of the most original and inspiring voices out there, and I’m excited to introduce you to her!

Tell us all about you! Who you are, what you do, what you love.

I’m Sarah, living in Northern California with my husband, one awesome dog, and one crazy cat. I am a consultant for Metropolitan Water District and I run my create business, Scout + Feather. I just recently re-launched my creative business with a clearer vision that includes creative services, one-on-one coaching, and new shop products. It’s been a crazy couple of months! I love connecting with people one-on-one. I’m an INFP (for those who love Myers-Briggs, holla.) and I absolutely love helping people connect with the core of themselves. My heart swells when people are at home in themselves, and living from that place. That’s why I started Scout + Feather. It all started from the creation of postcards called Notes To Humanity, and it’s continued to grow from there. (You can read more of that story on my website.)

What does a regular day look like for you?

Good question. What is regular? Sometimes I get into a routine and it works for a week or so, and then things get mixed around and it looks different. I thrive in routine, even though I love to “play things by ear.” That being said, I spend about half the day working from home on my contract work, and then the other half on the day on whatever Scout + Feather has for me. Emailing clients, creating new designs, packaging orders, working on web design projects, or diving into a Scout Session. I throw in iced coffee in the morning sometime and I like to go for a bike ride on my lunch break or at the end of the day. A lot of work, a little bit of fun, and a lot of rest. I’m working on the rest part. It’s hard to close-out the work day when you’re working from home.

What led you to begin your blog, as well as Notes to Humanity?

Well, I haven’t blogged in awhile. 😉 I like to write and have a place to communicate the hard stuff. I want to live an encouraging and transparent life online. The blog is where I put the topics that are too long for my “mini-blog” that my Instagram has become. I hope to speak about topics that are close to my heart and encourage people through my experiences.

Notes To Humanity came from the creation of encouraging designs on Instagram. After a couple months of posting them on there, I thought it would be cool to turn them into postcards that people could easily hand or mail to others to encourage them. The whole reason I keep creating the designs – now in postcards, greeting cards, and prints – is because I think words and art are powerful. I think they’re even more powerful when they’re given… so I wanted to help facilitate that process. Let’s all say the kind things we’re thinking.

Where do you find inspiration?

Honestly, the Influence Network is a huge place of inspiration for me. I like to look beyond other creatives or blogs – although those are deep wells of inspiration. I find that someone who is seeking a life of truth and love in the most ordinary life circumstances can be just as inspirational as someone who is launching a business or creating art and sharing it online. I actually don’t really care about the hype. I tend to follow people and read blogs based on content, and content alone. I am most inspired by people who dig into the nitty gritty and aren’t afraid to stay there awhile.

Best part of what you do? Hardest part?

The best part is when I connect with others, one-on-one. When I get to champion others in their ideas and dreams, and see them connect with their “why.” I love that I have a flexible schedule.

The hardest part is creating boundaries around work and rest. The busier I get, the harder it is to stop working in the evenings and unplug on the weekends. It’s also hard to stay vulnerable, because my business is so deeply connected to my heart. Some days it feels raw and scary, and that’s hard to stay in that place to see it through.

Favorite way to ‘treat yo’self’?

ICED COFFEE. Although is it a treat if I drink it every day? I guess an afternoon iced coffee is considered a treat for me.

I also like to stay mornings or afternoons off to treat myself.

Favorite Note to Humanity you’ve created?

I really like my new line of prints. I don’t know that I have a favorite, but I really believe in what I created. Those came from a really genuine place in me, and after I made them I felt like I found my stride.

Dance party time! What song do you put on?

ALL THE POP SONGS.

I seriously love pop songs. I like a ton of different music, although singer/songwriter stuff like James Bay, Ben Rector, The Decemberists, Brandi Carlile are my usuals. Current dance tunes: “Brand New” by Ben Rector, “What Do You Mean?” by Justin Bieber, and “Downtown” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

Who would you choose for your Woman Crush Wednesday?

Oh man, there are so many inspiring women to mention. My friend Ashley (@ashleyabrmsn) is one of my favorite writers and truth-seekers. Malinda (@maleefuller)  is doing encouraging things online, too. Nadine (@nadinewouldsay) is dropping truth bombs all over Instagram. She’s a great writer and apparently love tacos as much as I do.

What’s the biggest message you want to share through your blog and shop?

You have a wildly beautiful heart and mind already inside you. You don’t need fixing. Your joy, what makes your heart tick, and your ideas are all important. I want to explore those spaces with people. I want people to know their value has nothing to do with their hustle, and it’s important to tend to their souls.

What did I tell you? She’s full of heart, this one. 🙂

Thank you so much, Sarah! You can (and you should!) connect with her on her site, Facebook, and Instagram.
