Shop Around the Corner is a monthly series where I share a variety of fan-tas-tic small business owners that I think you’d really dig. It’s very important to me to share the love with fellow small business folks – the welcoming community of entrepreneurs I’ve met is quite strong, and there is so much incredible talent out there! I look forward to introducing you to great photographers, designers, shop owners…the list goes on and on!
I really love Instagram. Really and truly. I don’t love it for the sole purpose of posting pictures, but because of the community it can create. I have found so many uplifting, inspirational, and funny people on there that I would’ve never come across otherwise. We all know that Facebook can become a bit of a pity-party at times, but Instagram, if you find the right folks, can be a photo-laden stream of happy thoughts.
Now that I’m done gushing over the app, let me tell you about one of my favorite accounts! Melissa Beaver runs an Etsy shop called The Lovely Words, and by great chance, I found her on Instagram a few months ago (don’t ask me how…think it was a friend of a friend of a friend raving about her work!). She creates such beautiful prints – full of color and life and, well, lovely words. I’m thrilled to be introducing you to her today!
Tell us about your business!
the lovely words is a small paper company specializing in digital prints and scripture memory cards for children. it was created because i saw a need for a fun way to help my children learn scripture. my desire to hide the goodness of god in their hearts early on so that when the world presents challenges they have his promises to return to. later i began to add prints based on words that inspire me.
What made you decide to open The Lovely Words?
it opened as an outlet for my creativity and a way to contribute to our family’s financial goals.
Where do you find inspiration?
music is a big inspiration. scripture, nature, books i read and of course other artists.
Favorite item that you sell?
my favorite piece so far would be the reading is rad print. i created it for my daughter because she has recently fallen in love with the joy of reading. she loves the written word nearly as much as i do. she goes to sleep reading. she wakes up and grabs her book first thing. so that little piece holds a special place in my heart as a reminder of the sweetness of this season of motherhood.
Any advice for those just starting out?
well i actually consider myself “just starting out” so i don’t have a lot of wisdom to offer. just do what you love. create the art you would want to display in your own home. work hard. be kind & generous with your talents.
Three words to describe you/your life:
that’s a tough one….
rich with laughter.
Story or moment in business that was memorable/impactful:
recently someone from a catholic school in PA purchased a bundle of the “alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” print to give as gifts to the board members. that was super inspiring so see something i created being used to encourage others.
Favorite TV Show:
parenthood. there is an episode that doesn’t send me to bed in tears. i love the realness of life as a parent it presents.
(Molly here – YES to Parenthood…perfect for that good cry you’ve been needing 😉 )
Favorite Ice Cream:
Favorite vacation spot:
beach. always & forever.
Favorite Way to Spend a Saturday afternoon:
outside playing with my husband watching our kiddos play.
Favorite Part of running your shop:
getting to meet new people and build relationships with others. this is a very encouraging community and i am so thankful to be part of it!
