Shop Around the Corner is a twice-monthly series where I share a variety of fan-tas-tic small business owners that I think you’d really dig. It’s very important to me to share the love with fellow small business folks – the welcoming community of entrepreneurs I’ve met is quite strong, and there is so much incredible talent out there! I look forward to introducing you to great photographers, designers, shop owners…the list goes on and on!
If you have ever asked around for good places to shop in Columbia, Tennessee, I am *sure* you were told about Lily Jane. It has a little bit of everything, and the owner, Lucy McEwen, is great at keeping things fresh and inviting. She seems to constantly be finding and offering gorgeous, must-have items, which certainly keeps business booming! Many a birthday, I have asked for gift certificates to this shop, because I can find something I absolutely need each and every time I walk in the door…clothing, candles, jewelry, note cards, and more! I’m happy to be supporting a friend and a well-loved business owner in town with this little ol’ blog today!

Tell us about your business!
Lily Jane is a quaint little boutique located inside Buckhead Coffeehouse. We have fun apparel, fabulous jewelry, and a great array of gifts for just about anybody. Except men…..still working on that aspect.
What made you decide to open Lily Jane?
In high school, to earn “fun money”, I got a wonderful job working at Ye Peddler Gift Shoppe. That high school job turned into 8 years of retail experience. I adore Ye Peddler’s owner, Rachel Hughes, and will forever be indebted to her for laying the groundwork and giving me experience in such a fun environment. I knew Columbia was ready for another place to shop so in 2008 I opened Lily Jane.
Where do you find inspiration?
I am constantly searching the internet for fun merchandise to bring into the shop. I love Pinterest and Etsy but prefer real-life “pinning” with magazines. I find more products after seeing them featured in magazine spreads. I’m always researching creatively…..my mind never stops!
Favorite item that you sell?
My favorite item of the moment is the Blue Jean candle from Capri Blue. Scented with citrus, white musk, and patchouli it’s MY. FAVORITE. CANDLE.
Any advice for those just starting out?
Be passionate, be driven, and be dedicated! You have to love what you’re doing to have that long-term happiness. Always be willing to go above and beyond with your business. And be prepared to work ALOT in the beginning. I worked 6 day work weeks for a while.
